The 16th edition of New York Climate Week, one of the foremost climate change events in the world, took place between September 22 and 29. Based on the theme “It’s Time,” more than 100,000 people debated climate mitigation and adaptation solutions in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement.

Gustavo Luz, Fundo Vale’s executive director, took part in the Climate Finance panel discussion, alongside Andrea Azevedo, director of programs and projects at the JBS Amazon Fund; Lise Tupiassu, a professor at Pará Federal University; Vitoria Galvão, founder and coordinator of Palmares Lab; Maria Netto, head of green finance at the Institute for Climate and Society; and Belén Paez, executive director of the Pachamama Foundation in Ecuador. The moderator was Marcelo Furtado, Itaúsa’s sustainability director.

“We discussed how financing, regulation and cooperation between different sectors of the economy are key to tackling climate challenges. Obstacles related to access to capital, the identification and development of technologies and the scalability of initiatives remain common, especially in the private sector. Overcoming these barriers is essential if companies are to be able to implement impactful solutions on a large scale,” said Luz.

The panel took place at Amazon House in New York, a space designed to offer a deep immersion in the culture and biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforest. The environment was carefully prepared to highlight the theme of “Amazonian Customs,” including ancestral techniques and sustainable innovations. In addition to the climate finance theme, the space also featured panel discussions on the bioeconomy, equity and the creative industries.

Fundo Vale was also present at some other important events in New York, such as the Brazil Climate Summit, the Goldman Sachs Sustainability Forum and Sight Live, held in partnership with Just Climate, a fund dedicated to the energy transition and bilateral meetings and sector engagement. During these events, Fundo Vale strengthened its interactions with representatives of government, academia, the private sector, the financial system, the third sector and ESG service providers.

Road to COP

As the next global climate conference draws near, the “Road to COP” was also on the agenda at New York Climate Week. COP 29, to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November, is expected to focus on addressing the energy transition’s financial bottlenecks, while COP 30, scheduled to take place in Belém, Pará in 2024, is expected to bring green solutions to the fore, with an emphasis on the bioeconomy, renewable energies and climate justice.
